ETS4 - Studies in Advanced Structural Design

Structures are complex systems providing strength, stiffness and stability to buildings. Architects need to understand structural principles in order to design buildings that respond to challenging design briefs and site constraints. This course will build upon the knowledge developed during previous structures courses and apply it to real projects, class exercises and workshops. The objective of the course is to develop the ability of the students to apply the knowledge developed during previous structures courses and consolidate it with several hands-on workshops and exercises. The overall goal of the course is to develop the students’ technical ability and encourage creative thinking. Students will increase their understanding of structural first principles and, therefore will better prepared during development of their designs for other courses or in their future professions.

SASD 01 - Lecture 01 - Sustainable Structures

Course notes on sustainable structures. Risks and opportuntities that designers have to consider with the structure of project.

SASD 02 - Lecture 02 - Fundamentals

Course notes on engineering fundamentals. A recap on the basics of stress, strain, and Young's Modulus. Followed up with stability of elements and frames. Bridge workshop.

SASD 04 - Lecture 04 - Infrastructure & Embodied Carbon

Course notes on infrastructure and sustainable structures, including excel calculations. Network Rail footbridge workshop exploring design and the impact of embodied carbon.

SASD 06 - Lecture 06 - Timber Structures

Course notes on historic and modern methods of construction with timber. Workshop on Cowan Court.

SASD 07 - Lecture 07 - Masterclass

Course notes from the last lecture explaining the design process from concept through detailed design to construction for an automotive factory.
